What is the Gas Safe Register?

The Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body in the UK, including the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey. By law, all gas engineers must be listed on the register to legally perform gas work. It’s there to ensure that gas engineers and businesses are qualified and legally permitted to carry out their work, and to protect the public from unsafe gas work.

What qualifications do you need to become a gas engineer?

To work safely and legally as a gas engineer in the UK, there are multiple qualifications you will need. So, before learning how to become Gas Safe registered as an engineer, take a look at the requirements below.

The core qualifications include:

• CCN1: This is the main qualification that covers the fundamental gas safety principles.
• CENWAT 1: This allows gas engineers to work on central heating systems and boilers.

You can gain both by completing a Domestic Gas Heating Installer Course or a gas apprenticeship. However, if you have at least two years’ experience in a related trade (such as plumbing), you can complete a Gas Managed Learning Programme (MLP) instead. 

Domestic gas qualifications 

After holding your CCN1 for 12 months, you’ll be allowed to train on specific gas appliances – all of which need a separate qualification. For domestic gas appliances, some of the qualifications required include:

• CKR1: Cookers
• MET1: Meters
• DAH1: Warm air heaters 
• LAU1: Tumble dryers 
• REGT1: Medium pressure meter regulators. 

Other qualifications are needed to work with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and for commercial gas work. This is because commercial gas systems are more complex, with larger pipes and more complex controls and appliances, and they have additional regulations.

How to become Gas Safe registered 

Once you have all your qualifications, you can then join the Gas Safe Register. The register holds a record of all registered gas businesses and issues licences to engineers so they can legally work with gas. 

To apply, simply register on the Gas Safe Register website. All the evidence of gas safety competence will be sent by your qualifications’ awarding body directly to the Gas Safe Register.

Once the awarding body has sent evidence and you have successfully registered, you’ll receive a Gas Safe ID card showing exactly what types of jobs you are permitted to carry out.

How long does it take to become Gas Safe registered?

Becoming Gas Safe registered can take anywhere from a few months to several years, depending on your experience.

If you’re already a qualified plumber or heating engineer, you can often complete the necessary gas qualifications and registration within three to 12 months. For someone starting with no industry experience, the process typically takes two to four years, as it involves training, practical work experience, and passing the required gas safety assessments before applying for Gas Safe registration. 

Once qualified, the registration process itself is usually quick (a few days to a week) and includes a three-month probationary period.

The costs of the Gas Safe Register 

The Gas Safe registration cost has several different fees, such as:

• Application fee: £178.06 (including VAT)*
• New registration fee: £205.90 (including VAT)*
• Web registration renewal fee: £167.74 (including VAT)*
• Additional engineer: £53.28 (including VAT)*

The overall application cost differs depending on how many engineers your business has or whether it’s your first time registering. 

Factors to remember when applying for the Gas Safe Register 

When you’ve received your qualifications and they’ve been sent over to the register, the hard part is over. You’ll be given probationary registration status, so you will be legally allowed to carry out gas work. But there are a few factors you need to remember.

• The probationary period lasts for three months.
• During this time, you must maintain records of your gas work, provide examples when requested, and notify the register of all completed gas work.
• If you do not provide evidence of gas work completed during the probationary period, your registration will be suspended. You should only apply for registration when you are actively planning to undertake gas work.
• Any previous history you have on the registration scheme will be taken into account when assessing your progress.
• A business will successfully complete the probationary period once it has demonstrated competence through the Gas Safe Register inspection process.
• The Gas Safe Register reserves the right to extend the probationary period if the gas work notified and inspected is not of a satisfactory standard or does not adequately reflect the categories of registration held by your business or engineers. If an extension is required, they will work with you to provide the support needed to successfully complete the probationary period.

After you have passed the registration process, it will last 12 months. You will then need to apply for renewal one year from the date you registered.
